Japan er en af de ældste og mest berømte tatoverings-kulturer i verden. Tatoveringer eller irezumi i Japan kan spores tilbage til ca. 10.000 f.Kr. Gennem tiden har tatoveringen haft en svingende plads i det japanske samfund – hovedsagelig på grund af dens forbindelse med organiseret kriminalitet. I dag er tatovering i mange dele af Japan gået under jorden, og kunstnere er nødt til at være ekstremt hemmelighedsfulde omkring processen.
I 2018 er der imidlertid hundredvis af tatovører, der specialiserer sig i traditionel eller moderne japansk tatovering – og vi vil vise dig ti af dem.
